Sergeant First Class Ismael Iban and Staff Sergeant Jon Hilliard say they were just doing their jobs FORT LEWIS, Wash. - Sergeant First Class Ismael Iban and Staff Sergeant Jon Hilliard are the latest recipients of the Army’s third-highest award, the Silver Star.

The Army says Hilliard purposely placed himself in the line of enemy fire after being injured by a roadside bomb in Iraq last March. That helped nine other wounded soldiers make it to safety.

“We started taking large amounts of fire so I stood up on top of the Stryker to draw the enemy fire and firing back, my biggest fear was losing one of my boys,” said Hilliard.

Commanding officers say Iban led a platoon of soldiers, under heavy gunfire, to help secure a helicopter landing zone to evacuate 21 men wounded in a Iraqi suicide attack last February.

“When you’re up there and you hear your fellow soldiers are in trouble. You want to get there and you don’t think about the risk. You don’t think about anything. You just want to get there and help out,” said Iban.

Both soldiers say they were only doing their jobs.

“I really think I don’t deserve it. My boys deserve it…” said Iban.

“I just did what any leader would do. Protect my men,” said Hilliard.

But they both agreed, receiving the star is an important honor.

“Oh it’s a big deal,” said Iban.

“Soldiers everyday do great things in Iraq. It’s nice to see when they get awarded,” said Hilliard.

They also consider it a memorial for those who weren’t able to return to be recognized as heroes.

The Silver Star is awarded to those who show gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States.
